Interesting Facts About Paulding County

1832:
Paulding County establishes County Seat: Van Wert
1833: 
First marriage license: Allen York and E. Smallwood
1838: 
Indians removed west- "Trail of Tears"
1851: 
Polk County formed from Paulding and Floyd County.
1852: 
  • Paulding County has an area of 324 square miles.
  • County builds a Calaboose( Jail) in Dallas.
 
1854: 
County buys land for Court House in Dallas.
1861:
First School built in Dallas.
1864: 
War comes to the county.- Big Battles: Dallas, New Hope, and Picket's Mill.
1882:
East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia RR comes through Paulding County.
1883: 
Freight train wreck: Big Raccoon Trestle.
1884: 
  • Grand Jury investigates "Nest of gamblers" in Paulding County.
  • William B. Hogue, First Sheriff of Paulding County (1834) died.
 
1886: 
Watermelons sold for 2 cents each.
1887:
 Ice Storm kills most fruit.
1892:
New Court House building for Paulding County. Cost 18,337.00
1893:
Turtles getting to be a common piece of barter.
1898:
Revenue Officers have been interfering with some of our "Boys".
1903: 
Cotton Crops bring in 10,630 bales.
1912: 
Tornado destroys the 3rd Narroway Baptist Church building.
1914:
The Possum crop is said to be prosperous looking.
1915:
  • The school term was 100 days.
  • New Dallas High School cost $15,000.
  • Farm land for sale from $10.00 an acre.
  • Set of teeth cost $5.00
 
1919: 
Copper mines close down.
1924:
 Ford Motor Company "Runabout" sold for $265.
1927:
New Chevrolet "Touring Car" sold for $525.
1929:
"Sunday Excursion" round trip to Atlanta $1.25- Seaboard Railway.
1931:
Beef Roast advertised for 10 cent to 15 cent per pound.
1934:
Seaboard train wreck near Mt. Olivet.
1935:
Auto tag cost $3.00.
1939:
Electric cooking cost $1.75 a month or less.
1940:
  • New Chevrolet sold for $659.
  • Movie tickets at Dallas Theater cost 10 cent and 25 cent
 
1941:
Paulding farmers planted 100,000 kudzu plants.
1942:
Most snow in 50 years- 14 inches.
1945:
Paulding County has 3,055 families.
1948:
New Hope Battle Memorial Park dedicated.
